This place was called Rudhravanam at that time and was abode of Sages and Siddha Purushas. As per the "scrolls", the Shiva linga worshipped by Sage Agasthya will surface as the appropriate time. It is because of this reason, the Maha Sivarathri Rudra Homam is performed to propitiate Lord Shiva.

Chanting of Devi Saptashati (Devi Mahatmyam or Chandi Path) forms the central core of Chandi yagnam. The 700 verses of Devi Saptashati are found in the Markandeya Purana, which is one of the eighteen puranas. The Chandi Homam starts with MahaGanapathi Homam and Navagraha Homam in the morning, after which Mandapa Pooja is done. This is done to propitiate the parivara devatas. Their presence is invoked all thorough the four sides of the yagashala. In the evening, the 13 chapters of the Devi Mahatmyam are recited along With the offering of oblations in the sacred agni. It has been been our practice to lit the fire for the yagya in a most Pure and traditional way. Our shastras say that pure agni is the one obtained by rubbing the barks of an old Peepal tree, from the spark Obtained fire is lit for the yagya. We have been doing this way, whenever we perform the Chandi Homam.
